Spring Recital details
Spring Recital is the highlight of your dancer’s season—their chance to showcase everything they’ve learned for friends and family on the big stage! It’s exciting, busy, full of hairspray and glitter, and a lot of fun.
If this is your first recital, it can feel overwhelming. This guide will help you know exactly what to expect.
Location
All rehearsals and performances will take place at the Crawford Theater at The Emerson in downtown Bozeman, 111 S Grand Ave.
Girls Makeup
Black mascara (and carefully applied eyeliner)
Earth-tone eyeshadow
Blush, pink cheeks
Red lipstick, avoid orange or maroon tones
Fill in eyebrows if they are light
You may skip: eye crease, under-eye liner, and highlights
Makeup & hair
All dancers must wear makeup for both dress rehearsal and performances. Stage lighting can wash out facial features, and makeup helps your dancer be seen clearly from the audience.
Here is a helpful video that describes the steps for children’s stage makeup. You can skip the eye crease, under eye liner and highlights.
Boys Makeup
Very light makeup: Brown eyeliner, Light blush, Berry-colored lips
Some instructors may request additional makeup
Why is stage makeup important?
Stage lights are very bright, which can make dancers look washed out and pale. Facial features can fade, and expressions become hard to see.
Dance costumes are also bold and sparkly, often drawing attention away from your child’s face. We want to make sure their beautiful smiles stand out—this is where bright lipstick (and a little extra makeup) helps!
The stage is large and far from the audience, so enhancing your child’s features ensures they can be seen clearly from every seat.
Girls Hair
Center part with a low bun
Use strong hold hairspray and/or gel
No flyaways or loose strands. Stage lights will highlight messy hair—secure clean styles are essential!
Boys Hair
Hair should be brushed down and back, away from the face.
Use hairspray or gel to secure hair
Costumes
Costumes will go home with dancers between the last week of April and the first week of May. All accounts must be paid in full before costumes can be released. Please take great care of costumes, as they cannot be replaced before the recital.
Costume Care
To keep costumes in performance-ready condition:
Keep costumes hung at all times (tutus upside down)
Do not wear costumes before dress rehearsal or performances
No eating in costume
If necessary, wear a cover-up
Avoid messy foods
Tights & Undergarments
Dancers should be properly prepared under their costumes:
Wear performance-only tights - pieces will require pink or nude tights. preference is to purchase tights fromt he studio so dancers are in matching tights. They make tights colors so confusing!
Tan and pink tights are available at the studio ($15)
Tights must be free of holes, runs, or stains
Female dancers should not wear underwear under tights/costumes
A nude leotard may be worn or required for some costumes (available for purchase)
What to wear
When arriving for rehearsal or performances:
Wear a front-opening cover-up like a zip up sweatshirt or fleece and comfy pull on pants.
Avoid anything that needs to be pulled over the head or can snag tights.
If you have multiples pieces use a nude leotard to wear under your first costume.
If you have quick changes with different color tights. Layer your second pair of tights under your first for easy and QUICK changing.
Arrive dressed in your costume and stage ready!
Be Prepared
Please have everything ready days before dress rehearsal:
All costume pieces
Dance shoes - Check for fit
Tights - check for holes, runs and stains.
Accessories - put in a ziplock and hang on the hanger.
For dancers with multiple costumes, a laundry basket or collapsible bin is very helpful for staying organized backstage.
